I generally care about football. A lot. Actually, it's probably unhealthy how much of my Sundays (and the rest of the days of the week) are consumed with thoughts, talk and planning about football games during the NFL season. Mostly KC Chiefs, but I got in to the Superbowl last year. I made my roommates watch the Chiefs take on Tampa Bay (and lose 25-0) in August, when the D.C. heat made football season the last thing any of them probably wanted to think about. Our victory over the Packers in December was literally the best start to my Christmas vacation I could have asked for.
But I did not care about this weekend's Superbowl game. The New York Who played the New England What? I didn't even care about the commercials. I caught a glimpse of some polar bears, a stripping M&M and almost too much of David Beckham (though I would now like an explanation for all his tattoos), but I had other things to do. Someone asked me who I wanted to win. I said, "The Patriots because that was my grade school's mascot." Other than that, I couldn't find a reason to pay much attention this year. I didn't even catch the half-time show.
I know that it's important. It's like the World Cup for Americans. But not really ...

That's why I was pleased when MSNBC.com didn't make a huge deal of the game, either. Sure, it was there, an American news site can't ignore the Superbowl. But it wasn't the only thing on the home page, before or after the game.
I'm glad not all news sites have lost complete perspective on news that really matters. As it should be, President Barack Obama's face was just as high on the page as the Superbowl coverage. Kudos to MSNBC for that.
